The island of Gharapuri on which Elephanta Caves are situated is off the coast of Mumbai with ferries carrying passengers from Gateway of India. Here, we have made a list of few amenities available on the island for tourists:
Restaurants: Gharapuri does not have large settlements or star restaurants. However, there are a few small restaurants available on the island including one from Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). The location is prime and the view from the restaurant is splendid. The food at the restaurant, there may be limited options but good enough to manage. If you are going in a large group, there is merit in calling the restaurant in advance and making suitable arrangements. Contact information of the restaurant can be availed from MTDC website.
Hotels, Lodges or Accommodations: Overnight stay of tourists on the island is neither permitted nor any infrastructure built for this purpose. MTDC has built a resort, but it entertains only day boarding and expects the customers to check out before evening when the last ferry leaves the island. There may be few unorganized home stays available in the Gharapuri village, but I would advise against such an arrangement. Mumbai has hundreds if not thousands of accommodation options ranging from budget hotels to 7-star ultra-luxury properties all within a short distance of Gateway of India.
Refreshment Stalls: As you enter the island, you’ll find several stalls and small shops selling snacks, bottled water, and refreshments. These are perfect for quenching your thirst and satisfying your hunger after the ferry ride before you set off to explore the caves or after exploring the cave complex. Grab a quick bite to recharge and keep yourself energized throughout your visit.
Restroom Facilities: Elephanta Island provides clean and well-maintained restroom facilities for visitors. These amenities ensure convenience and hygiene, allowing you to freshen up during your trip. You can take a restroom break at any time without worrying about finding suitable facilities.
Souvenir Shops: Near the entrance of the Elephanta Caves, you’ll find souvenir shops where you can browse and purchase unique crafts, artwork, and trinkets. These shops offer a variety of items that make great mementos to remember your visit to the island. Support local artisans and find something special to take home.
Guided Tours: To enhance your experience and gain a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the Elephanta Caves, there are knowledgeable guides available on the island. Engaging a guide can provide valuable insights into the intricacies of the sculptures and artwork found within the caves. They can take you on an informative journey, unveiling the stories behind the ancient structures. Ensure that you take a certified and licensed guide and not just anyone who portrays to be a guide. The guides are trained and certified by ASI & Tourism departments; you can ask to check their badges.
Shaded Seating Areas: During your exploration of the island, you’ll find shaded seating areas where you can take a break, rest, and soak in the beautiful surroundings. These seating areas provide a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere of Elephanta Island, particularly on hot and sunny days.
